Synopsis: A girl’s sweet sixteen party is supposed to be among the most memorable events of her life. But on the night of hers, Mercy Clare wakes in the waiting room of a hospital with no memory of how she got there. To make matters worse, she’s wearing something she’d never be caught dead in: her best friend Lyla’s clothes.

Mercy’s nightmare is just beginning. The doctor arrives to tell her that it’s she who lies in the hospital bed waiting to die. A trip to the bathroom confirms Mercy’s fears, as Lyla’s face stares back at her and Lyla’s curvy figure pokes through her tight clothes.

But finding out what’s really going on won’t be easy. Because if Mercy wants her body back, it might just cost her Lyla’s life.

Ashley's Review

When I first read the synopsis for Into the Dark, I was kind of on the fence about wanting to read it. It sounded interesting to me, but I'm so behind on reading that I wasn't sure if it was something that I absolutely HAD to read. I decided to go for it though, and I am so, so glad that I did! This book was absolutely wonderful, from the creepiness to the paranormal/fantasy to the little bit of romance to the excellent portrayals of family and friendship. I'll try to stay as spoiler free as possible, but there might be a few minor ones.

One of my favorite things about this book was that I didn't know very much going into it. The synopsis covers about the first 5% of the plot, and after that it's pretty much a crazy roller coaster ride. It was actually really nice to have to try to guess what was going to happen next. I was pleasantly surprised that I couldn't guess all of the twists and turns (although I did call a few of them), so the suspense kept me turning pages well past my bed time!

I had mixed feelings about most of the characters. Mercy kind of annoyed me, but I started to kind of understand her situation better the more I saw of her life. She's a nice enough girl thrown into an extraordinary situation, so it's not a huge shock that she didn't make some great decisions. Gage was probably my favorite character - even though he makes some pretty bad decisions himself, he's always learning, changing, and growing. He's willing to put aside the past to save the future, no matter how hard it is for him.

The plot doesn't move terribly fast, but it's quick enough. There's enough explanation so that things don't get confusing and enough action that things don't get boring. It was so interesting to find out who is good and who is evil and who is maybe somewhere in between. There's a huge gray area that's not really common in most YA, so I appreciated that quite a bit. Caroline also handles relationships very well, and I didn't feel like the romance was too rushed (it's actually fairly slow, which was nice), and the families are not all perfect. They have their own problems, and they've had to cope with them in various ways.

If you're looking for a unique read that's not really one genre or another, I'd totally recommend Into the Dark! It's a little horror, a little supernatural, a little romance, and a lot thriller. I hope there's a sequel, because I need to know what's going to happen next! There's not a cliffhanger ending, but it's definitely open enough for there to be more. Also, Death Cab for Cutie references always get points in my book! 4/5!
