My Pre-Reading

Synopsis: Beneath the streets of New York City live the Avicen, an ancient race of people with feathers for hair and magic running through their veins. Age-old enchantments keep them hidden from humans. All but one. Echo is a runaway pickpocket who survives by selling stolen treasures on the black market, and the Avicen are the only family she's ever known.

Echo is clever and daring, and at times she can be brash, but above all else she's fiercely loyal. So when a centuries-old war crests on the borders of her home, she decides it's time to act.

Legend has it that there is a way to end the conflict once and for all: find the Firebird, a mythical entity believed to possess power the likes of which the world has never seen. It will be no easy task, though if life as a thief has taught Echo anything, it's how to hunt down what she wants . . . and how to take it.

But some jobs aren't as straightforward as they seem. And this one might just set the world on fire.

Review: I absolutely LOVED this book! There are so many elements that are just perfectly my thing. There is a fantasy world just below the surface of our own world. In this world, two ancient sides battle in a never-ending war. One side has a likeness to dragons while the other has an avian affinity. An orphan with a shadowed past has found her way into this mostly unknown world. She is neither of the human world or of the Avicen. A true orphan.

This fantasy world of course has really cool magic that is so well integrated into the world. Grey did an excellent job world building. There were so many interesting locations all around the world. The world created in this book is definitely bigger than one book.

The chapters are perfectly small, which I found led to me reading more at once. The perspective shifts between characters without being in first person. This is truly an ensemble book with a group focus. All of the characters grew and became more interesting the further into the book i read. Diversity is definitely represented in this book.

JASPER! I loved this character. He had so much amazing sass. I definitely ship Dorian and Jasper.

The writing in this book matches the greatness of everything else. There were so many quotes I just had to tweet. The dialogue is written so well. The light humor and sarcasm of Echo came across throughout the book. It set a great tone for all the other characters to blend with.

Can you tell that I truly did enjoy this book? It is like Harry Potter meets Avatar: The Last Airbender meets Star Wars! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book! I will read anything Melissa Grey writes! I give this book a 5/5!!!
